More than 80 percent of the population suffers from some form of low back pain.  Significant daily work productivity is lost because of individuals suffering from low back pain.Low back problems can even cause some individuals to lose or quit their jobs.  Low back pain can be triggered by many things such as muscle strain from being overused; an injury to the muscles, ligaments, bones, or discs that support the spine; or pressure on the nerves located in the back.

A low back injury can cause pain, weakness, numb feeling, or even loss of limb use.  Some common back disorders include but not limited to:

  • Herniated disc (slipped disc): It is when the discs of the back, which are located between the bones of the back (vertebrae), are injured.   They may bulge abnormally or even break open.  This can interfere with the nerves of the back.
  • Spondylothesis: It is a defect or fracture of the wing shaped part of the vertebrae.  These wing shaped parts keep the vertebrae in place along the spine.  This condition can cause pressure on the nerves.  This is a common injury for gymnast and football lineman.
  • Spinal Stenosis: It is the narrowing of the spinal canal which can squeeze and irritate the spinal cord.  This condition usually seen in people over 50 years of age.
  • Fracture: It is caused by a significant force on the back such as an auto accident.
  • Scoliosis: It is when the spine curves abnormally from side to side rather than being straight.

Any one of our daily activities can cause a low back injury.  From a simple sneeze to lifting boxes off the floor can cause low back discomfort.  It is important to keep the core muscles strong and to learn to lift with the proper technique.  Even all preventative strategies do not guarantee being low back pain free.  Persistent low back pain should be evaluated by your health care provider.
