These include but are not limited to high blood pressure that is pregnancy induced, early contractions, and bleeding.
It is important to talk to your doctor about these or any other possible problems. In general it is safe to exercise while pregnant but with the routing being adjusted. Most of these adjustments are due to the change in the female body at this time. To begin with the female body changes in shape along with an increase in weight. This will cause a shift in the center of gravity which puts more pressure on the low back region. Also joints such as knees and ankles are at risk due to the increase in weight. A women’s internal body temperature is increased during time, thus make sure you exercise in a cool environment and keep hydrated. Pregnant women need more calories for them and their baby, thus if you do exercise you need more energy than someone who does not exercise.
So what are the benefits of exercising while pregnant? To begin with, most women just feel better due to the following:
- Having energy boost seen with exercise.
- Having better sleep patterns.
- Easier labor and delivery due to stronger muscles.
- Quicker return to pre-pregnancy body.
Walking is usually the most recommended exercise for pregnant women. Other good exercises are swimming, yoga, and biking along with some strength training and stretching. You want to avoid contact sports, bouncing or jarring movements, and exercise the position the body on stomach. Remember to listen to your body and learn how it responds. This is especially true during the third trimester. The goal is to not increase your fitness level at this time but to maintain enough to be beneficial to you during the term of your pregnancy.
